Ten body shop services, explained

The services below cover the range of work an auto body shop is asked to handle, from a parking-lot ding to a structural repair and the insurance claim that runs alongside it. Each page explains the general process, what changes the scope, and what to ask. None of them is a price quote, and current scope for a specific vehicle is confirmed directly with the shop.

Ten services, organized by the damage

The services below cover the range of work an auto body shop is asked to handle, from a parking-lot ding to a structural repair and the insurance claim that runs alongside it. Each page explains the general process, what changes the scope, and what to ask. None of them is a price quote, and current scope for a specific vehicle is confirmed directly with the shop.

Before scheduling

Scope changes with condition

The estimate should always follow the assessment, not the other way around. A repair judged only from a photograph can miss damage behind a panel, so the useful conversation happens after the shop sees the vehicle and can explain what it finds.

Parts and paint set much of the timing in this trade. A late-model vehicle may need specific parts, and a metallic or tri-coat finish takes more preparation and blending than a solid color. Ask how those factors apply to your vehicle rather than relying on a general timeline.

Structural work comes before cosmetic work. If an impact moved the frame or unibody, that has to be measured and corrected first, because panel gaps, door fit, and paint are only as good as the structure under them.

Insurance and repair are separate tracks. The insurer decides what is covered under the policy; the shop documents what the vehicle needs. If hidden damage is found after disassembly, a supplement is the normal way to record and approve it.

Not every dent is the same job. Paintless dent repair suits damage with intact paint and access behind the panel, while broken paint, sharp creases, or blocked access call for traditional body and refinish work. The method follows the metal, not the size alone.

Some damage is a safety question before it is a cosmetic one. A wheel that has shifted, a door that will not latch, or a vehicle that pulls or feels unstable should be towed rather than driven, and the assessment should start there.

Ask what is not included. A clear scope names the panels and structure being addressed, what depends on parts or an insurer decision, and what the owner should do while the vehicle is in the shop. That clarity is what keeps a repair predictable.
